A Christmas Holiday Isn’t Complete Without Carols

A Christmas Holiday Isn’t Complete Without Carols

One of the many Christmas traditions people celebrate is caroling. This tradition is said to go back to centuries ago when people would gather and sing in a religious gathering while others say the history of caroling has nothing to do with religion and is instead given the outdated term of wassailing.
No one knows with one hundred per cent certainty but both sides agree it did involve a group of people known as carolers. Legend has it that this group of carolers gathered together and sang in order to be fed, hence the term, “sing for your supper.”  Whichever version is correct, as time passed, door to door caroling died down somewhat but is still very much a tradition especially in smaller towns with a close knit population. For many people, today’s modern caroling involves carolers singing in Christmas parades, at church functions and in private homes.

An Artificial Christmas Tree or a Real One ?

Christmas excitement reaches a whole new level when it’s time to set up the
Christmas tree. But before you set it up, you have to pick whether you're going to choose an artificial tree or a real one. There are pros and cons to either choice so decide which one would be best for you.

With artificial trees, there are no needles to vacuum off the floor and you won’t have the hassle of any pets constantly nipping at the needles like with a live tree.

Purchasing an artificial tree means you won’t have to wonder if you brought any bugs into your home that can damage your houseplants and there’s no allergy factor with artificial trees as there can be with real ones.

Unlike real Christmas trees, you can buy artificial ones during the year and you won’t have to wait until the last minute to bring it home. You can get a jump on getting your Christmas items in place so that when the holidays arrive, you’re not out in the frantic shopping crowds.

On the flip side, real Christmas trees have a wonderful scent and they simply smell like Christmas.
The branches are easier to decorate than the sometimes thicker branches of artificial trees and, since the branches are attached to the tree, you won’t have the frustration of trying to match color coded branches to little slots.

Real Christmas trees are easier to take down and get out of your home. When the season is over, you can bag your real Christmas tree and many cities have a recycling program where used Christmas trees are turned into mulch, thus helping the environment.

So, it will soon be time to decide which kind of tree you prefer - which will you choose ?

Christmas Ice Skating

It is said that the first instance of ice skating happened about 4000 years ago in Finland. The skates were made of sharpened bone attached to the foot which enabled the skater to glide over the ice. Nowadays, the blades are made of metal with sharpened edges which allow the skate to cut into the ice.

Ice skating is a popular winter sport which everyone can enjoy and, if you are a skater or have a skater in your family, some of these gifts with vintage images might make an excellent choice for Christmas.

The Christmas Tree

The tradition of Christmas trees as it exists today originated in  Germany and came to the USA by
way of immigrants. But it isn't clear how the tradition really gained a foothold
in Germany. One story is that Christians in Germany during the 16th century
started to bring trees into their homes and decorated them. Some of those
Christians would build pyramids for Christmas. The pyramids were made of wood
and would be decorated with evergreens and candles if wood was in short supply.
It is however Martin Luther, a Protestant reformer, who is said to have
been the first to add lighted candles as decoration to a tree based on his
inspiration from the brilliant light of twinkling stars that shone through
evergreen trees as he walked home one winter evening.
As the legend goes, Martin Luther placed a tree in a primary room of his
house and placed wires with small, lighted candles around the branches of the
tree. And that is how, as the tale goes, the Christmas tree as known today, was
started.
